NBA Pundit Rankings (2008-2011 Seasons)

September 24, 2012  |  Sports

We are launching the site with 10 NBA Pundits from ESPN, each of whom made preseason picks in the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12 seasons. We have tracked their predictions across 11 categories: 6 Division titles, 2 Conference titles, Championship, Rookie of the Year, and Most Valuable Player.

Here is how they ranked based on our $1 Bet Yield metric, which calibrates predictions for boldness by measuring the average payout (using Vegas odds) had you placed $1 bets on each of the pundit’s selections.

$1 Bet Yield for NBA Pundits (2008-2011 Preseason Predictions)
Pundit Average$0.92$1.21$0.92$1.60$1.16
Maurice Brooks$0.70$2.14$1.11$1.82$1.44
Chad Ford$1.28$0.47$1.36$2.39$1.38
Chris Broussard$1.54$1.08$0.89$1.49$1.25
John Hollinger$0.70$0.74$0.98$2.44$1.22
Henry Abbott$0.70$1.08$1.24$1.51$1.13
Jalen Rose$1.28$1.63$0.40$1.15$1.12
J.A. Adande$0.96$1.29$0.62$1.46$1.08
Scoop Jackson$0.58$1.77$0.78$1.12$1.06
Marc Stein$0.96$1.26$0.89$1.12$1.06
David Thorpe$0.50$0.67$0.89$1.51$0.89

The pundits’ collective yield over the three-year period was $1.16, meaning that betting equally on all their picks would have resulted in a 16% gain. All but one of the ten pundits generated positive payouts, with Maurice Brooks topping the list. Brooks had a particularly strong 2009-10 slate of predictions, pegging nine of the eleven categories correctly (the next best pundit in our list got seven right).

Simply picking the consensus favorites in each category (as deemed by Vegas) would have generated excellent results ($1.28), with only Brooks and Chad Ford topping that figure.
